GARUT, WEST JAVA, INDONESIA – MAY 12, 2025 In the Cibalong district, there was an explosion of expired ammunition, which claimed the lives of 13 people. The explosion apparently occurred when local residents entered a pit used for ammunition disposal to collect brass. Movement in the pit caused an explosion of yet-undisposed ammunition. 9 civilians and 4 members of the Indonesian army were torn to pieces.
One of the surviving civilians, 26-year-old Anjas, testified that it was a massacre. He was lucky not to be in the pit at the time of the explosion, but was hit by several metal shrapnel and even pieces of his friends’ bodies.
Another survivor said that all the residents thought the ammunition disposal was already completed. No one expected that there might still be unexploded ammunition left in the pit. Reportedly, local residents had been doing this for several years to earn some extra money, and there had never been any problem.
