TAMIL NADU, INDIA, 2018 A man identified as Dinesh Kumar repeatedly demanded sexual intercourse from his 13-year-old neighbor. When his demands were refused, he beheaded her in front of her mother. He then took the severed head home to show his wife as a kind of trophy, and later threw it onto the street. Kumar was arrested shortly after the act by the police under the 1989 law relating to crimes arising from caste-based violence. The court’s verdict is not known.

The act was motivated not only by sexual desire but also by caste. The girl belonged to a poor worker family from the lowest caste, known as Dalits. Although, in the eyes of Indian law, which seeks to fight the caste system, Dalits have the same rights as everyone else, in practice this is often not the case, and Dalits often lack access to education. The caste system is still deeply rooted in society.
Due to the sense of superiority that membership in a higher caste can give, such attacks are not uncommon. Perpetrators sometimes feel they can do absolutely anything to people from lower castes. This is precisely one of the reasons why the caste system remains a serious problem that needs to be actively addressed.
