PHUKET, THAILAND – JULY 5, 2018 47 tourists, mostly of Chinese nationality, died in a sinking of a cruise ship near the Thai island of Phuket. The tragedy shook all of Thailand and ranks among the largest maritime disasters in the country’s modern history.
That day, the cruise ship Phoenix set sail from Phuket heading to Koh Racha Island – a popular destination for snorkeling and diving. About 100 tourists, mostly from China, were on board, looking forward to a relaxing day at sea.
While at sea, the weather suddenly turned severe, and the Phoenix was hit by a heavy storm. The ship was not prepared for the strong winds and high waves and began to experience problems. At one point, a large wave struck the ship, causing it to start sinking despite the captain’s efforts. The rough sea and insufficient rescue equipment led to 47 passengers losing their lives.
Thai authorities immediately launched a thorough investigation after the incident. It was revealed that the ship was not at all prepared to sail in such conditions. The safety equipment was inadequate, and the crew was not properly trained to handle such a situation. Furthermore, it was found that the captain ignored warnings about the extreme weather. Five people, including the ship’s owner, captain, and other crew members, were charged with negligence leading to death.
The tragedy sparked widespread discussions about the safety of tourist cruises in Thailand. Authorities introduced stricter inspections and regulations to prevent similar incidents. Tourists were also warned to choose reliable operators and not to underestimate warnings about bad weather.
