CALI, VALLE DEL CAUCA, COLOMBIA – AUGUST 21, 2025 On the busy Carrera Octava street, near the Marco Fidel Suarez Military Aviation School, a massive car explosion occurred involving a vehicle loaded with explosives. The blast was so powerful that it severely damaged nearby buildings and vehicles. Five people were killed and 36 others injured. Not all the injured are in stable condition, so the death toll may rise over time. Although the attack was likely aimed at military personnel, civilians were among the victims.
The Colombian government condemned the attack, labeling it a terrorist act. President Gustavo Petro attributed responsibility to a dissident FARC group, a communist faction fighting against the Colombian government, which has resorted to terrorism before.
On the same day in Colombia, a police UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, participating in an operation against coca cultivation, was shot down. Twelve police officers were killed and several others injured. This attack is also attributed to FARC dissident factions.
