ISTANBUL, TURKEY – AUGUST 27, 2025 Turkish sports community is devastated by the tragic news of the death of Alemdağ Sport Club football president, Tuncay Meriç. He was assassinated in a café while enjoying dinner. The attacker approached him from behind and shot him directly in the head. Meriç was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where he was shortly afterward pronounced dead.

Turkey is a relatively safe country, and such incidents are very rare there. That is why the police launched a very intensive investigation, and within a short time they managed to detain seven suspects. The main one is someone named E.H. from Uzunköprü in the Edirne province. Several of the other detainees were supposed to have helped him in his escape.
Although the police investigation is still not concluded, according to the available information the murder was motivated by revenge related to a financial debt. Early media reports suggest that there may also have been connections to disputes within the local sports scene.
