MYANMAR (BURMA) Flower seller was brutally attacked and stabbed to death by one of the so-called resistance groups. Although the exact motive for her murder was not disclosed, context suggests she may have been a quiet supporter and informant for the military junta. In Myanmar, civilians who provide information to either side are often executed.
Myanmar has been in a largely forgotten civil war practically since gaining independence in 1948. The military has often ruled by force, while various ethnic groups sought greater freedom. The situation worsened in 2021 when the army overthrew the elected government.
Footage from Myanmar is often extremely brutal and bloody – unsurprising in a country where entire generations have grown up knowing nothing but war, with violence becoming normalized. Although organizations like the UN attempt to send aid and call on the army to stop its attacks, the junta enjoys support from Russia and China. Public awareness of the conflict is almost nonexistent; many people don’t even know Myanmar exists. As a result, there is little global pressure to end the war, giving Russia and China free rein to finance battles that continue to claim the lives of people fighting for freedom.
