SAN ANTONIO DE GUERRA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – SEPTEMBER 6, 2025 16-year-old Maite Evangelina Jerónimo de la Cruz had been dating a significantly older man, 26-year-old Henry Rafael Torres, for two years, starting when she was 14. She had to keep their relationship a secret from her parents because Torres was often aggressive and had previously beaten her multiple times over conflicts arising from his controlling behavior and obsessive jealousy.

On the fateful day, Saturday, September 6, Maite left her home in the Mata de Palma area on the outskirts of Santo Domingo to meet him secretly. He began displaying his typical jealous outbursts, which escalated into her murder. He stabbed her seven times with a kitchen knife and fled the scene. She was found alive but died before paramedics arrived.
Torres was located and arrested by the police on September 9. He will soon be brought to court to face charges for the crime. The national police assured the public that anyone committing murder, especially gender-motivated crimes, will face severe punishment.

The victim’s aunt, Elmita de la Cruz, said she repeatedly warned Maite to leave him, even telling her to do it before he killed her. After six months of their relationship, Maite told her family she had broken up with him, but unfortunately, that was not true. She remained emotionally attached and continued seeing him.
