They emphasize the inner state of the heart, love, humility, and connection with God rather than strictly following formal religious doctrine.
Although occasionally someone practicing Sufism may resort to self-harm, religious scholars condemn this. They argue that trying to display virtue through destructive actions is driven purely by the ego, which contradicts true virtue. A true Sufi knows his virtue comes from within and does not need to prove it to anyone.
