HAITI Two gang members were painfully punished by their own organization, allegedly for disobedience. They were tied to a tree and beaten with a wooden plank.
In Haiti, gangs are often highly hierarchical and operate under their own strict rules. There is usually a gang leader (sometimes called a “chef” or “baron”) and several levels of subordinate members. Every member is expected to obey orders, and disobedience is seen as a threat to the gang’s authority and stability.
Physical punishments are unfortunately common in some gang structures. These can include beatings, torture, or public humiliation to scare other members into compliance. The use of violence also has a deterrent effect on the community and within the gang, demonstrating that resistance or disobedience will not be tolerated.
