MASAGUA, GUATEMALA – DECEMBER 7, 2025 Armed men used the Christmas parade to attack the mayor of the small town of Masagua. The attack occurred in the village of El Obero, part of the town, while he was walking in the parade with his wife, greeting neighbors. 38-year-old Nelson Luciano Marroquín died during transport to the hospital. One of his bodyguards was injured during the attack.

Authorities have so far announced no progress in the investigation, nor any suspects. President Bernardo Arévalo commented on the incident and condemned it, stating that he personally ordered security forces to track down the perpetrators.
Marroquín began as a local businessman before entering politics. After winning the mayoral elections, he focused mainly on community projects. Residents of the town spoke of him mostly positively. He was not known to have any enemies who would seek his life.
