Couple attacked with bear spray during marketplace sale

CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA – DECEMBER, 2025 Online sale turned into a violent attack for a couple in Calgary, Canada. The husband and wife became victims of a brutal home invasion after two men came to buy a gaming laptop.

What started as a normal online transaction quickly escalated. Jason Nguyen had listed a gaming laptop for sale and arranged to meet the supposed buyers at his home in south Dover, where he lives with his wife, Nanh Au. The men arrived shortly after the agreed time, fully covered from head to toe, which didn’t seem unusual given the freezing temperatures.

Once inside, they acted like typical customers, asking about the laptop’s condition and promising to pay via e-transfer. But after Nguyen provided his contact information, the situation turned violent. One of the men pulled out bear spray and repeatedly sprayed Nguyen directly in the face, temporarily blinding him.

A struggle followed, during which Nguyen was dragged outside, punched, and beaten across his body. By holding onto the attacker, he managed to make the men drop the laptop, preventing them from stealing it. The assault continued until Nguyen’s wife intervened, grabbing a shovel and forcing the attackers to retreat.

One of the men briefly returned inside to retrieve a dropped cellphone before fleeing. Police arrived within minutes. Nguyen sustained multiple bruises and scratches, and the couple had to clean their home due to the bear spray.

Calgary police described the incident as a serious assault and attempted robbery, warning the public about the dangers of inviting strangers into their homes for online sales. They recommend conducting transactions in safe, public locations, ideally police station parking lots.

The investigation is ongoing. Police have video footage of the perpetrators and are examining the laptop and bear spray for fingerprints. They are also asking anyone with security or doorbell camera footage from the area to come forward. No arrests have been made so far.
