BẢO YÊN, LÀO CAI, VIETNAM – JANUARY 20, 2026 Boy playing in the street was attacked and chased by a stray dog. While trying to escape, he was not careful enough, tripped, and fell into the road directly under one of the passing trucks. Fortunately, it did not run over any vital part of his body, but it crushed his left leg. The boy is facing several difficult months to years of recovery.
In Vietnam, as well as in other countries of Southeast Asia, stray dogs are a common part of both rural areas and cities. They often stay near temples, where they feed on leftover food. Some communities tolerate them, feel compassion for them, and regularly feed them. The dogs often suffer from various diseases and occasionally attack people. In recent years, nonprofit organizations have been trying to improve the situation through neutering, vaccinations, and public education.
The incident is a warning to all parents – small children must not be left without adult supervision for even a single second. Especially not on a busy street full of cars, strangers, and stray dogs. Children do not always know how to properly assess danger and cannot fully imagine the consequences of their actions.
