EL DESIERTO DE SONORA, SONORA, MEXICO – SEPTEMBER 25, 2025 Case of fifteen-year-old Leyla Monserrat Lares Becerra from the city of Sonoyta in the state of Sonora sparked massive outrage in Mexico. According to the investigation, the girl was lured on September 25, 2025, by two underage acquaintances, 15 year-old Britany Michel and 13-year-old Monserrat, into a house in the El Desierto ejido area in the municipality of General Plutarco Elías Calles. Allegedly, it was a pre-planned trap, because the girls had reportedly argued with Leyla shortly before and cut off contact.

According to available information, Leyla was tied to a chair inside the house, blindfolded, and strangled. The entire attack was also allegedly recorded on a mobile phone, and the video later appeared on social media. This recording became key evidence and was reportedly even anonymously sent to her mother.
After the murder, the perpetrators tried to hide the body and, according to reports, buried it and covered it with lime. Leyla’s mother stated that her daughter had been bullied for a long time before her death, including because of her skin color.
However, the biggest wave of backlash was caused by the later sentences. The older of the girls was supposed to receive a sentence of just under three years in prison, while the younger one was placed only under supervision. Many people consider this an extremely lenient punishment given the brutality of the crime. The case has thus become a symbol of the debate over whether Mexico’s juvenile justice system is too forgiving in situations like this.
