ISTANBUL, TURKEY – SEPTEMBER 26, 1990 Hiram Abas was a prominent Turkish intelligence officer and former high-ranking official of the MİT secret service, who became especially known for his role in fighting left-wing extremists during the Cold War. He was also known for having contacts with foreign intelligence services, including the CIA and Mossad, and for operating within Turkey’s anti-communist networks.

He was shot dead in Istanbul while on his way to work, when his car came under fire from armed attackers. The radical organization Dev-Sol claimed responsibility for the attack, viewing Abas as one of its key enemies. The assassination later became one of the symbols of an era of politically motivated killings in Turkey, many of which were never fully clarified.
