SHANGHAI, CHINA – MAY 19, 2026 In a Japanese restaurant in an office building in Shanghai, China, a knife attack occurred in which three people were injured. The attacker was reportedly a 59-year-old man who, according to police, attacked people inside the restaurant on Century Avenue in the Pudong area with a fruit knife.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and detained the suspect. Investigators stated that the man was acting confused, spoke incoherently, and had previously been treated for mental health issues. One of the injured remains in critical condition in hospital.
The case also drew attention due to previous attacks on Japanese people in China that were linked to anti-Japanese sentiment. After the incident, the Japanese government called on China to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the safety of Japanese citizens in the country.
