CALDONO, CAUCA, COLOMBIA – JANUARY 27, 2026 Tragic traffic accident occurred around 7:00 a.m. on the Pan-American Highway in the Pescador sector near the municipality of Caldono. On the route between Popayán and Cali, a public transportation vehicle operated by Velotax collided with a tractor-trailer carrying animal feed. Following the impact, both vehicles caught fire, and a large fire broke out at the scene.
Seven people initially died in the accident. Among the victims were both drivers, Juan Carlos Bolaños, the truck driver, and Diego Fernando Galviz, the Velotax driver. Also killed was 10-year-old Diego Fernando Arias Gironza, who was traveling with his foster mother, Nataly Montenegro. The boy was under the care of the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF) and was traveling to Cali that day for a medical checkup.
Two other people were seriously injured in the collision. One of them was 27-year-old Juan Pablo Salazar Rojas, who was hospitalized in Popayán after the accident. Despite fighting for his life for several weeks, he succumbed to his injuries on February 9. Following his death, the accident’s death toll rose to nine.
The Pan-American Highway was completely closed for several hours after the accident. Rescue workers and other personnel had to clear the wreckage, recover the victims, and deal with the aftermath of the fire. The exact cause of the collision remained under investigation. Initial hypotheses suggested that one of the vehicles may have entered the opposite lane, while local residents also pointed to possible excessive speed.
