The Piper PA-31-325 Navajo aircraft was reportedly scheduled to fly to Medellín, according to preliminary information. However, after takeoff began, investigators said the aircraft did not lift off the runway normally. The plane continued beyond the runway, subsequently crashed, and caught fire.
Along with Jiménez, Juan Manuel Rodríguez, Óscar Marín, Jefferson Osorio, Weisman Mora, and pilot Hernando Torres were killed. The singer had been scheduled to perform in Marinilla, Antioquia Department, on the day of the crash.
Jiménez was one of the best-known figures in Colombian popular music. During his career, he built a large following not only in Colombia but also among Latin American communities abroad. His death therefore prompted a strong reaction from fans and representatives of Colombian culture.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. The information available so far allows the sequence of events to be described with reasonable accuracy, but it is not yet possible to determine with certainty why the aircraft failed to take off normally.
