RECIFE, PERNAMBUCO, BRAZIL – JUNE 1, 2026 Nineteen-year-old Marcela Vitória de Lima Santos became the victim of a serious shark attack at Boa Viagem Beach. The young woman was spending the afternoon by the sea with family and friends when she decided to enter the water. Shortly afterward, a shark attacked her, causing devastating injuries to her right leg.
According to witnesses, her relatives noticed that she was having trouble in the water and was trying to get back to shore. Her cousin, together with other people, immediately rushed to help and managed to pull Marcela from the sea. By coincidence, a doctor was on the beach and provided first aid, using an improvised tourniquet to stop the massive bleeding. Doctors later stated that the rescuers’ quick response and immediate first aid played a key role in saving her life.
Marcela was then transported to a hospital in Recife, where she underwent several procedures. Due to the extent of her injuries, doctors had to amputate her right leg. After surgery, she was admitted to the intensive care unit, where she remained in serious but stable condition. Several days later, she released a short video from her hospital bed in which she thanked the people who helped her and said that she believed in her recovery.
Investigators concluded that the attack was most likely carried out by an approximately three-meter tiger shark. This species is among the most dangerous sharks in the world and has been linked to numerous attacks on humans. The coastline of Pernambuco state has long been considered one of the highest-risk areas in Brazil for such incidents.
The case attracted extraordinary public attention because it occurred just one day after another serious shark attack in the same area. In the previous incident, an eleven-year-old boy suffered injuries so severe that he also lost a leg. Two serious attacks within just 24 hours reignited debate about swimming safety on local beaches and about measures that could reduce the risk of similar tragedies in the future.
