SANTA ROSA DEL SUR, BOLÍVAR, COLOMBIA – MARCH 8, 2025 In a rural area of Santa Rosa del Sur, an attack took place in which two police officers were killed while on duty. The victims were identified as Sub-inspector Omar Enrique Medina Cuberos and patrol officer Jorge Eduardo Ramírez Herrera.
According to information from local media and police statements, the uniformed officers were sent to the area after receiving reports of suspicious armed individuals. When they arrived at the location, they were attacked with an improvised explosive device (IED) and later with firearms. One of the officers died at the scene, while the other later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
The investigation at the time pointed to possible responsibility of the armed group ELN (Ejército de Liberación Nacional), which has long been active in the area. In the region, other armed structures are also present, including dissidents of the former FARC and the organization Clan del Golfo.
