MUKDAHAN, THAILAND – JULY 2, 2026 Northeastern Thailand was struck by a tragic accident that claimed the lives of ten Buddhist monks and left several others injured. The crash occurred in Mukdahan Province, where an 11-year-old boy took his parents’ pickup truck without permission and drove into a group of monks taking part in a traditional walking pilgrimage.
The group consisted of 35 Buddhist monks and five lay followers. About half an hour before the crash, they had departed from a temple in Mukdahan Province on a roughly 160-mile (260-kilometer) pilgrimage to the neighboring province of Ubon Ratchathani. The monks were walking in single file along the roadside when the pickup truck suddenly plowed into them. Security camera footage shows the vehicle swerving before leaving the roadway and crashing directly into the procession.
Five monks were killed at the scene. Another five later died in the hospital, bringing the death toll to ten. More than ten other people were hospitalized, several of them with critical injuries.
According to police, the boy, who reportedly had special needs, stayed home from school because he was sick and took advantage of being alone in the house. He grabbed the keys to the family’s pickup truck, drove about six miles (10 kilometers), and eventually crashed. After the accident, he was placed in the care of authorities. Police said he was too traumatized to be questioned immediately after the tragedy. Investigators are also examining whether his parents could face responsibility for failing to properly supervise their child.
The tragedy sparked widespread grief across Thailand. Buddhist monks hold a deeply respected place in Thai society, and traditional pilgrimages, known as thudong, are an important part of the country’s religious life.
