Tibetan activist set himself on fire in front of UN Building in NYC

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, USA – JULY 2, 2026 Tragic incident took place outside the United Nations headquarters in New York City. During a public protest, Tibetan activist Lobga Rangzen (42) poured a flammable liquid over himself and set himself on fire. He was carrying a Tibetan flag and, according to witnesses, signs calling for an end to Chinese rule over Tibet. He also livestreamed the entire protest online.

Emergency responders and police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. The man suffered severe burns over most of his body and was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The investigation was taken over by the New York City Police Department.

Lobga Rangzen was originally from Tibet but had lived in the United States for about two decades. According to Tibetan exile organizations, he had long supported Tibetan independence and worked to raise awareness about human rights abuses and efforts to suppress Tibetan culture and identity. His protest came just one day after a new Chinese law on “ethnic unity” took effect. Critics describe the law as another step toward the forced assimilation of ethnic minorities, including Tibetans and Uyghurs. The Chinese government rejects these claims, saying the law is intended to promote national unity and stability.

The incident sparked a strong reaction among the Tibetan diaspora and human rights organizations. Memorial gatherings and candlelight vigils were held in several cities to honor the deceased activist. According to Free Tibet, more than 150 Tibetans have self-immolated in protest against Chinese rule in Tibet since 2009. Among some Tibetan activists, self-immolation is viewed as an extreme form of nonviolent protest intended to draw the world’s attention to the situation in Tibet.
