LASHPUR VILLAGE, MOULVIBAZAR DISTRICT, BANGLADESH – JULY 3, 2026 Twenty-year-old Atiq Bin Qayes suffered life-threatening injuries after, according to local sources, he was attacked by a group of armed assailants while riding a motorcycle. A local juvenile gang linked to the drug trade has been accused of carrying out the attack. The attackers repeatedly stabbed him and beat him with iron rods before fleeing the scene. The critically injured young man was rescued by local residents, who transported him to a hospital. Due to severe lung injuries and extensive blood loss, he had to undergo emergency surgery, and his condition remains critical. Police are investigating the case and searching for the suspected attackers.
Such attacks are not uncommon in Bangladesh. In recent years, so-called “Kishore gangs” – gangs made up primarily of teenagers and young adults – have become increasingly active, especially in urban areas. These groups have been linked to violent assaults, murders, extortion, drug trafficking, robberies, and the intimidation of local residents. They are most active in the capital, Dhaka, but their activities have also been reported in other parts of the country. Although Bangladeshi authorities have repeatedly carried out crackdowns against them in recent years, experts warn that juvenile gang crime remains a serious public safety issue.
