Suicide of Andrew Phillip Cunanan

MIAMI, FLORIDA, USA – JULY 23, 1997 Andrew Phillip Cunanan is among the most notorious American murderers of the 1990s, primarily because his final victim was the famous Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace. Over the course of less than three months in 1997, he murdered five men across several U.S. states, triggering one of the largest manhunts in FBI history. Eight days after Versace’s murder, he was found dead aboard a houseboat in Miami Beach. He was 27 years old.

Cunanan was born on August 31, 1969, in California. From a young age, he was known for his exceptional intelligence, excellent memory, and ability to appear highly charismatic. At the same time, he frequently lied and created fictional life stories to present himself as a successful and wealthy man. After finishing school, he associated with affluent older men who financed his luxurious lifestyle. He lived beyond his means, frequently changed identities, and liked to portray himself as a millionaire or a member of prominent families. Despite this, he never held a stable job or had a genuine source of substantial income.

His killing spree began on April 27, 1997, in Minneapolis, where he killed his acquaintance Jeffrey Trail with a hammer. Shortly afterward, he shot and killed his former partner David Madson. He then traveled to Chicago, where he brutally murdered real estate magnate Lee Miglin, whom he bound, tortured, and killed. A few days later, he shot cemetery caretaker William Reese to steal his pickup truck and continue his escape. His final victim was Gianni Versace, whom he shot outside his luxury mansion in Miami Beach on July 15.

Although the case was investigated extensively, the true motive for the murders has never been determined. Investigators considered several theories. Some suggested that the killings were connected to his collapsing life, financial problems, or rejection by former partners. There was also speculation about mental illness, resentment toward wealthy men, or a desire for publicity. Even the murder of Gianni Versace was never satisfactorily explained. There have been claims that the two men may have briefly met several years before the attack, but it was never proven that they personally knew each other or maintained any contact. Andrew Cunanan took his true motive to the grave.

After murdering Gianni Versace, Andrew Cunanan hid for several days in an abandoned luxury houseboat near the crime scene. Police were unaware of his hiding place. On July 23, the caretaker heard a gunshot coming from the houseboat and called the police. When officers entered, they found Andrew Cunanan dead. He had shot himself in the head with a .40-caliber Taurus pistol, the same weapon he had used to kill several of his victims, including Gianni Versace. He left behind no suicide note or any other explanation for his actions.

His suicide brought one of the largest police manhunts of the 1990s to an end, but it also deprived investigators of the only person who could have explained the motive behind the entire series of murders. Andrew Cunanan therefore remains one of the most mysterious serial killers in modern American history.
