CHANHASSEN, MINNESOTA, USA – APRIL 21, 2016 Prince Rogers Nelson, the world-famous musician who performed under the name Prince, died at the age of 57 at his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen. The artist was found unconscious in an elevator, and the paramedics who responded were unable to save him.
The autopsy determined that the cause of death was an accidental fentanyl overdose, an extremely powerful synthetic opioid. The investigation showed that Prince had long suffered from chronic pain and apparently believed he was taking a commonly prescribed pain medication. In reality, the pills were counterfeit and contained a fatal amount of fentanyl. Toxicology tests confirmed that the concentration of the substance in his body was extremely high.
Federal and state authorities then conducted an investigation that lasted nearly two years to determine the source of the illegal pills. In April 2018, they announced that they were closing the case without filing any charges. Investigators were unable to identify the person who supplied the counterfeit pills, nor did they find any evidence that Prince’s death was caused by intentional actions or a conspiracy. The death of the music legend was therefore officially ruled a tragic accident caused by an unintentional fentanyl overdose.
