MILAN, ITALY – JULY 4, 2026 Milan police are investigating a brutal attack in which 55-year-old Italian Gerardo P. was stabbed more than twenty times outside the La Giada bar in the San Siro district. The incident occurred in the morning while the man was sitting outside having coffee with his father. According to the investigation so far, an unknown young man approached him and, without any prior conflict, repeatedly stabbed him in the back, chest, and abdomen. Patrons and passersby overpowered, disarmed, and detained the attacker until police arrived. The victim was taken to Niguarda Hospital in critical condition, but after several surgeries his condition began to improve, and doctors say he is no longer in immediate danger of death. Investigators are treating the case as attempted murder.
Police arrested 22-year-old Lamin Saidilly at the scene, a man born in Italy to parents of Gambian origin. According to investigators, he did not know the victim, and the motive for the attack remains unknown. The prosecutor believes the suspect may have planned the attack in advance and was looking for a random victim. After his arrest, he allegedly told police, “I enjoyed it. When I get out, I’ll do it again.” Investigators are examining his background and mental state. His family said he had left home several days before the attack and, to their knowledge, had never been treated for a mental illness. During a search, officers found notes containing disjointed and motivational writings. Police also said they have so far found no evidence of links to extremist organizations or any other clear motive for the attack.
