SODEPUR, WEST BENGAL, INDIA – JULY 8, 2026 Brutal attack shocked India, in which a man fatally attacked his wife with a knife on a busy street. The tragedy occurred in the North 24 Parganas district near Rathindra Cinema Hall.
Subhash Das (37) repeatedly stabbed his wife, Gita Das (33), in public. Bystanders tried to stop and disarm him, but their intervention came too late. The woman suffered severe injuries and collapsed at the scene. After being transported to the hospital, doctors pronounced her dead.
Immediately after the attack, the man stabbed himself in the abdomen with the same knife in an apparent suicide attempt. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he remains hospitalized. Police have launched an investigation, and once he recovers, he is expected to face criminal charges.
According to statements from neighbors, the couple lived in a rented house in Sodepur. Local residents claim there had previously been incidents of domestic violence in the relationship, and Gita Das was reportedly considering leaving him. However, this information comes from witnesses and has not been officially confirmed by investigators. Police have not yet disclosed a motive for the attack.
