Murder of 14-year-old girl shocked Thailand

TAMBON SIB ET SOK, CHACHOENGSAO, THAILAND – JULY 13, 2017 It all began with the discovery of the lifeless body of a 14-year-old girl, known by the nickname Nong Ploy, inside her home in the Sib Et Sok Subdistrict. The body showed signs of extreme violence – the victim had extensive bruising on her chest, rope marks on her neck consistent with strangulation, injuries to the back of her head, and blood coming from her mouth and nose. A court-ordered autopsy performed at the Institute of Forensic Medicine of the Police General Hospital confirmed that the girl died from asphyxiation. The investigation took a decisive turn after semen stains were found on her clothing, immediately leading detectives to launch a brutal rape and murder investigation.

The attack itself took place during the quiet of the night while the victim was sleeping alone at home. A 31-year-old neighbor and day laborer, Supornchai Nunoi, took advantage of the situation and broke into her room with the intention of sexually assaulting her. When the girl woke up and fought back fiercely, the attacker physically overpowered and raped her. Because they were neighbors, she immediately recognized him and threatened to report everything to the police the following morning. Fearing that he would be exposed, Supornchai decided to silence her. He began brutally strangling her and knelt on her chest with the full weight of his body while firmly covering her mouth and nose with his hands until she suffocated.

Investigators immediately focused on the area surrounding the house and launched an intensive search for the perpetrator. The key breakthrough came through forensic analysis of the collected evidence. DNA recovered from the victim’s clothing was a complete match to the profile of the suspect, Supornchai. Police also recovered his fingerprints and a bloodstain from a bedsheet in the victim’s room. When the suspect was arrested on July 19, 2017, investigators discovered that he had successfully evaded the law for years. He had been living and working in the area under the false identity of his younger brother, who closely resembled him, to hide the fact that he had already been convicted of rape in 2008 and that several active arrest warrants had been issued against him in other provinces for additional sexual assaults and drug distribution.

News of the repeat offender’s arrest and the details of his crime sparked widespread outrage across Thailand. When police planned to conduct a standard crime scene reenactment with the suspect at the scene of the tragedy, hundreds of furious local residents and the girl’s relatives gathered outside the house, demanding the death penalty for the killer and attempting to break through police lines to lynch him. For security reasons, officers were forced to immediately cancel the reenactment and quickly transfer the suspect back into custody.
