KWAMKI NARAMA, CENTRAL PAPUA, INDONESIA – JANUARY 5, 2026 Aprilia Magai, a woman with a mental illness, was struck by an arrow while walking past the position of one of the opposing groups. According to police, she was not a member of either side of the conflict. She died after being struck, and her body was taken to RSUD Mimika Hospital.
The victim
The incident occurred during a months-long armed conflict between the Dang and Newegal groups, who used traditional weapons against each other, including bows and arrows. At the time of the attack, security forces in the area were dismantling the fighting camps of both sides. The conflict was subsequently ended later that month through a traditional peace ritual during which the arrows were symbolically broken.
