YAHUKIMO REGENCY, PAPUA HIGHLANDS, INDONESIA – JULY 20, 2026 In the Indonesian part of the island of New Guinea, the cold-blooded execution of three alleged civilians took place. They were reportedly a married couple and another woman. According to Indonesian authorities, the attack was carried out by armed separatists linked to the OPM (Organisasi Papua Merdeka) movement. Security forces subsequently launched a search for the perpetrators.
Papua has long been one of Indonesia’s most problematic regions. The area, which was previously under Dutch administration, became part of Indonesia in the 1960s, a move that some local residents continue to dispute to this day. Some Papuan groups seek independence and claim that local people face political marginalization, discrimination, and excessive influence from the central government in Jakarta.
The most significant armed separatist group is the OPM, whose military wing is often referred to as the TPNPB (Tentara Pembebasan Nasional Papua Barat). These groups conduct an armed resistance against the Indonesian government and security forces. In the past, they have carried out attacks against soldiers, police officers, state institution workers, and civilians.
The conflict in Papua takes the form of a long-running low-intensity insurgency, with violence occurring on both sides. The Indonesian military and police regularly conduct operations against separatists, while armed groups attack government officials, infrastructure, and individuals they consider collaborators with the Indonesian government. Critics have also pointed to cases of human rights violations during security operations.
Remote mountainous areas such as Yahukimo are among the least accessible parts of Papua and also among the places with the most frequent clashes. The difficult terrain complicates the work of security forces and humanitarian organizations, and local residents often find themselves caught between the two sides of the long-running conflict.
