After World War II, Korea was divided into North and South. The North, communist, was led by dictator Kim Il-sung and supported by China. The South, democratic, was supported by the United States. In 1950, the southern side was attacked by the northern side with the goal of unifying the entire Korean Peninsula under communist rule. This started the Korean War, which lasted until 1953.
The United States and the UN intervened on the side of South Korea after the outbreak of the war. Washington considered the invasion of South Korea to be part of the spread of communism during the Cold War. The US military sent soldiers, air forces, and naval forces. This alarmed China, which feared the presence of American forces near its borders. China sent hundreds of thousands of troops into the war under the designation Chinese People’s Volunteers.
Chinese soldiers attacked American and South Korean units, inflicted heavy losses on them, and pushed them back south. One well-known example was the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, where American forces fought in extreme winter conditions against much larger Chinese forces. The war eventually stabilized approximately around the original border at the 38th parallel. In 1953, an armistice was signed, but a peace treaty was never created – technically, North and South Korea are still at war.
The Korean War claimed the lives of approximately 3 million people, including hundreds of thousands of civilians. The United States lost an estimated 36,000 soldiers. China, according to estimates, lost up to hundreds of thousands.
