RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – AUGUST 4, 2026 Forty-year-old Marcelo de Alcântara Brito died after being shot during an attempted robbery in the Olaria neighborhood in the northern part of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. According to available information, Marcelo was a person with autism spectrum disorder and became the victim of an attack by a man who attempted to steal his necklace.

The incident occurred around noon on Rua Drumond street. According to investigators, the suspect arrived on a motorcycle and approached Marcelo with the intention of carrying out a robbery. When the victim attempted to leave the area, the attacker allegedly chased him and fired several shots.
A security camera reportedly captured the moment when the perpetrator shot Marcelo as he was fleeing after the robbery was announced. Witnesses stated that the man may have been caught off guard by the sudden attack and began running away, which could have led to the perpetrator’s violent reaction.
Injured Marcelo was found and assisted by passersby. He was first taken to Getúlio Vargas Hospital and later transferred to Balbino Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The attacker fled the scene without taking the stolen item. The case is being investigated by the Homicide Division of Rio de Janeiro (Delegacia de Homicídios da Capital – DHC), which is working to identify and arrest the perpetrator.
