Dozens of bodies of dead Malian soldiers found in desert

TABARASHAT, MALI – JULY 20, 2026 Malian army suffered heavy losses in an ambush on its convoy south of the city of Anefis in northern Mali. According to available information, the unit was attempting to break through a blockade when it was attacked by JNIM, a jihadist organization linked to al-Qaeda.

Following the attack, dozens of bodies of Malian soldiers were reportedly found in the surrounding desert. However, the exact number of casualties is not yet known, and the information has not been officially confirmed by the government in Bamako.

Tabarashat is located in a vast and sparsely populated desert region of northern Mali, where armed groups have a significant advantage due to their familiarity with the terrain. Long movements by military convoys are particularly risky there, as units are exposed to improvised explosive devices and coordinated ambushes, while rapidly sending reinforcements or evacuating the wounded can be difficult in the event of an attack.
