RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – AUGUST 8, 2026 Tragic sightseeing helicopter crash occurred. The aircraft went down in the Vista Chinesa area of Tijuca National Park, one of the city’s most famous tourist locations with a view of the Christ the Redeemer statue.
The helicopter operated by a company providing panoramic flights took off from Jacarepaguá Airport and was supposed to offer tourists a short sightseeing flight over the city. On board were 17-year-old Colombian beauty influencer Sofia Murillo, her mother Wendy Manrique (37), grandmother Rocio Cubillos (59), and pilot Alessandro Rocha (51). None of them survived the crash.

According to witnesses, the helicopter crashed into a densely forested area on the slope of the park, where a large fire broke out after impact. The difficult-to-access terrain significantly complicated the rescue operation, as emergency responders had to reach the wreckage through steep and overgrown areas. By the time rescue teams arrived, no survivors were found.
Sofia Murillo was known on social media, where she shared content focused on cosmetics, beauty, and self-confidence. She was in Brazil with her family on vacation, and the sightseeing flight was supposed to be part of their visit to the country. Her death sparked a wave of reactions in Colombia, with fans posting memories and condolences on social media.
The cause of the crash is currently unknown. The case is being investigated by Brazil’s Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA) together with police. Authorities stated that, according to available information, both the helicopter and the operator had valid documentation, and the aircraft had undergone regular maintenance.
