LIMA, PERU – AUGUST 12, 2026 Two armed men on a motorcycle attacked a bus operated by Nuevo Horizonte in the Ate district. One of them boarded the bus on Los Parques Street, posing as a passenger, and then fired at the driver as many as seven times.
The driver, Julio Enrique Serra Centurión, 43, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was left in critical condition in the intensive care unit. A 14-year-old passenger was also injured. After the shooting, the attacker got off the bus and fled on the motorcycle, where an accomplice was waiting for him.
The attack on the driver came at a time when public transportation in Lima is facing widespread extortion. Criminal groups demand regular payments from transportation companies, known as “cobro de cupos,” and threaten those who refuse to pay with violence. According to media reports, Nuevo Horizonte had received threatening messages shortly before the attack, and its buses had become targets of intimidation. Authorities are therefore also investigating the attack on the driver as a possible case of extortion.
