TARN TARAN, PUNJAB, INDIA – AUGUST 30, 2026 Brutal murder of a young man occurred in front of a bus station. The victim was Jagjit Singh, also known as Jagga. Sources disagree about his age – initial reports stated that he was 22 years old, while later media reported that he was 20. Jagjit worked as a DJ.

Jagjit had married Jashanpreet Kaur just a few weeks before his death. However, her family reportedly opposed their relationship. According to police, Jagjit left her home with Jashanpreet on July 18, and the couple subsequently got married despite opposition from her relatives. Investigators believe their relationship was the likely motive for the subsequent attack.
On the day of the murder, Jagjit’s mother-in-law, Kulwinder Kaur, contacted him and asked him to come to the bus station in Tarn Taran. According to the family, she told him that she wanted to visit his home and meet her daughter. Jagjit arrived at the location without knowing that his wife’s two brothers were waiting for him there.
According to police, Jaspreet Singh and Harpreet Singh, the brothers of Jashanpreet Kaur, were at the bus station. As soon as Jagjit arrived, the two men allegedly attacked him with sharp weapons. The attack took place in broad daylight in a busy location. Jagjit suffered multiple stab and slash wounds, particularly to his head and neck, and died at the scene.
Particularly shocking was the fact that while Jagjit was lying on the ground and the attackers continued their assault, a number of people nearby merely watched or recorded the incident. One of those present, Gurinder Singh, attempted to intervene. He managed to overpower Jaspreet Singh, but was himself injured during the intervention.
Police are investigating the case as a possible honor killing connected to the couple’s love marriage. Investigators said Jashanpreet Kaur’s family opposed her relationship with Jagjit and had objections to him. The police version also states that Jagjit had originally taken Jashanpreet away from her village, while his father, Tarsem Singh, claims that the family initially tried to obtain her relatives’ consent for the marriage, but they refused.
Jagjit Singh therefore died just weeks after marrying Jashanpreet Kaur. Although police primarily link the attack to her family’s opposition to their relationship, the investigation is ongoing, and authorities are examining the exact sequence of events and the possible involvement of additional people.
