Woman hit in face by hoof

GLOUCESTER, UNITED KINGDOM – FEBRUARY 4, 2018 33-year-old Becca Brown, an officer in the British Navy and an experienced rider, suffered a serious facial injury after being kicked in the head by her horse. The incident occurred on February 4, 2018, when Becca was leading her eight-year-old gelding named Gibson to pasture. Despite taking all safety precautions, including wearing a helmet and sedating the horse, the horse suddenly reared while crossing a muddy gate and kicked her directly in the face.

Becca remained conscious and was immediately taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Doctors found that she had a fractured skull, a crushed nose, broken eye sockets, and other serious facial injuries. She underwent a seven-hour reconstructive surgery during which metal plates and screws were inserted into her face and a bone graft was taken from her hip.

Becca decided to share her story to highlight the importance of personal accident insurance for riders. Although she had insurance for her horse, she discovered that her own insurance did not cover such injuries. Thanks to a coincidental membership in a riding club that included personal accident insurance, she had at least partial coverage.
