Video shows prison bullying, or rather a lynching, of a man convicted of raping several women. His fellow inmates stripped him naked, tied him up, and beat him collectively. Unfortunately, this is the fate of many violent offenders in Latin American prisons. Many of them don’t even leave prison alive, as such attacks are repeated at every possible opportunity.
There is an unwritten hierarchy in prisons. Rapists of women and children are usually at the very bottom. Other inmates, including murderers and drug dealers, consider these crimes to be impure and particularly disgusting.
In many cases, prisoners are also motivated by psychological factors. They try to cleanse their own name by pointing to someone who, in their view, committed something morally worse.
Last but not least, it has been confirmed that many inmates experienced some form of sexual abuse during childhood. When they find out that their cellmate committed a similar act, it can trigger aggression and a desire for revenge.
The structure of Latin American prisons also plays a role. They are usually overcrowded, and the main rules inside are set by gangs. Prison guards only care that no one escapes and that there is no riot. They do not interfere in internal matters.
