QUZHOU, ZHEJIANG, CHINA – JULY 20, 2021 23-year-old Xiao Qiumei tragically lost her life when she fell from a crane at a construction site from a height of 160 feet (48 meters). It happened in front of hundreds of shocked viewers as she was live streaming on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok.

Xiao had over one hundred thousand followers on Douyin, where she shared her workdays as a crane operator. Her audience was fascinated by the sight of a petite young woman controlling such a massive machine, and through her short videos, they enjoyed the view from crane cabins along with her.
The tragedy apparently occurred when she was trying to take a selfie on one of the upper platforms of the crane. She likely slipped, and there were no safety features on the crane’s structure that could have caught her. She died at the scene.
Xiao’s case sparked a wave of emotion not only due to her young age but especially because she left behind two small children. It also ignited a public debate about the risks people take to get perfect shots for their social media.
