NAIROBI, KENYA – JUNE 17, 2025 Incident in the center of Kenya’s capital has sparked a wave of emotion far beyond the country’s borders. During massive protests downtown, an unarmed street vendor selling face masks and water – who wasn’t even participating in the protest – was shot, or more accurately executed, by police officers.
The protests that led to the shooting were triggered by the death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang. He was well-known for criticizing corruption and police brutality. While a state-ordered autopsy claimed he died of natural causes, an independent autopsy revealed severe signs of violence – stab wounds and evidence of suffocation. This fueled widespread public outrage and led to mass demonstrations across the country.
The victim was later identified as Boniface Kariuki. Once a video of the incident surfaced, the protests intensified, with demonstrators demanding justice for his death. In response, the Inspector General of Police ordered the arrest of two officers involved – one was charged with murder, the other with assault.
Boniface Kariuki was not the only victim of Kenyan police brutality. At least 17 people were killed during the crackdown on the protests.
