LAGOS, NIGERIA When two Nigerian thieves were caught in the act, the enraged crowd showed them almost no mercy. The thieves were stripped naked and lynched to death. One of them even had his foot cut off with a machete.
Although almost all countries actively fight against so-called street justice, in poor countries like Nigeria it is a real challenge. Residents have almost no trust in the judiciary or police. They believe that if they handed the thief over to the police, he would just pay a bribe and escape justice – which unfortunately is often true.
