BOGOTÁ, COLOMBIA – JUNE 7, 2025 Colombia was shaken in the summer of 2025 after Miguel Uribe Turbay, a 39-year-old senator and contender for the 2026 presidential nomination, was shot during a campaign event and later died from his injuries. A fifteen-year-old attacker opened fire on him during a public gathering in Bogotá. Uribe suffered severe head wounds and, despite more than two months of intensive medical care, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

The attack triggered a large-scale investigation and reignited concerns about rising political violence in the country.
