MYANMAR (BURMA) Group of anti-government rebels carried out an assassination against a high-ranking military authority in Myanmar. While he was traveling with his wife in a civilian car, the rebels rushed out from both sides of the road and opened fire with assault rifles. Both the official and his wife were killed instantly. The attackers shouted in celebration of their small victory before quickly fleeing the scene.
Since the military coup in 2021, Myanmar has been engulfed in one of the bloodiest conflicts of the present day. The army violently overthrew the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi and seized power, sparking mass protests and armed resistance. Protesters eventually evolved into organized rebel groups fighting against the junta.
Although this war is often overlooked by global media – and many people may not even know where Myanmar is – it is a full-scale civil war with devastating humanitarian consequences. Estimates speak of 3.5 million displaced people and around 20 million in need of aid.
Even though the latest chapter of the conflict began in 2021, Myanmar has faced nearly continuous armed struggles ever since the departure of British colonial rulers in 1948.
