SULAWESI, INDONESIA Toraja ethnic group, often found on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, practices a traditional ritual called Ma’nene. People exhume the bodies of their deceased family members, clean them, and dress them in civilian clothes. The family also performs rituals and prayers during this occasion and often interacts with the body as if the person were still alive.
For the Toraja, this is a sign of respect and love for their ancestors, maintaining family bonds and preserving the memory of the deceased. From their perspective, it is not morbid, but rather a cultural and spiritual tradition that strengthens family ties and honors the past.
