PAPANTLA, VERACRUZ, MEXICO – AUGUST 4, 2025 On a roadway near the town of Papantla, the dismembered remains of at least three men were found scattered both on and beneath a bridge. Alongside the bodies, several warning messages were discovered, signed by the group known as Grupo Sombra, a criminal organization active in the area and notorious for extortion and brutal tactics.
The incident is reportedly closely tied to a recent prison uprising in the city of Tuxpan, where inmates took control of the facility for over 12 hours and executed eight fellow prisoners affiliated with Grupo Sombra. The reported motive behind the revolt was that other inmates had grown tired of enduring the group’s violence and decided to strike back.
