The incident took place in the Belford Roxo favela, which is known for its high levels of violence. Two rival gangs operate there, competing for power: Comando Vermelho (CV) and Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP). On top of that, the favela is often the target of police operations.
Local residents of such areas face daily challenges related to violence and drug trafficking. In favelas like this, everyone knows at least one innocent person who was killed by a stray bullet during a shootout. Despite these conditions, the favela remains the only place they can live due to lack of financial resources.
