BURDWAN, WEST BANGAL, INDIA – OCTOBER 14, 2025 Leaked video shows the leader of the Trinamool Congress (an Indian populist political party), Sheikh Kaloo, administering physical punishment to a young man named Amit Roy. For unknown reasons, he was sentenced by a so-called kangaroo court, after which the politician brutally beat him with a sword and publicly humiliated him. Some sources claim the incident has a religious undertone.
The video provoked strong reactions from both the public and politicians. Most condemned the incident and pointed to the ongoing problem of kangaroo courts throughout West Bengal. According to them, public trust in the legal system needs to be strengthened. Human rights organizations and opposition politicians are demanding an immediate and fair investigation and that Sheikh Kaloo be held accountable.
