KENYA – FEBRUARY, 2026 Man allegedly committed a serious criminal offense. This outraged all the villagers to the point that they decided to take justice into their own hands. They collectively lynched him and set him on fire. A video taken by one of the villagers shows the last minutes of his life.
The phenomenon of vigilante justice is quite common in Kenya, although not as much as in other parts of Africa. Residents have little trust in the police, which is often corrupt, and feel that if they do not punish the offender themselves, he will escape justice entirely. However, even in Kenya, bypassing the state justice system in this way is illegal. Anyone participating in a lynching often risks more severe legal consequences than the offender himself. Even a criminal or murderer has basic human rights, including the right to a fair trial and punishment according to the law.
