KHAN TUMAN, SYRIA, 2016 In the Khan Touman area of Syria, a tragic event occurred during the Syrian war when the terrorist group Al-Nusra Front executed several Iranian Revolutionary Guard soldiers. These soldiers were part of a group sent by Iran to Syria as defenders of the shrine of Hazrat Zainab – a symbolic site for the Iranian community. For Iranians, these men are considered heroes, as their presence helped prevent terrorist groups from reaching Iranian territory.
Al-Nusra Front, an ally of ISIS in the region, played a key role in coordinated attacks against areas in Syria and Iraq, as well as against the Resistance Front forces that opposed extremist expansion. After capturing strategic points in Syria and Iraq, Nusra sought to take the town of Khan Touman, located near Aleppo. The attack on the town was supported by regional and global actors, including Saudi Arabia, and involved the use of suicide bombers and other forces.
The heavy assault, which began on May 6, 2016, caused significant losses for the Resistance Front and led to the martyrdom of several fighters. The following day, May 7, the town was ultimately captured by Al-Nusra and its allies. The events in Khan Touman highlight the complexity and bloodshed of the Syrian conflict, where local, regional, and global interests collided, while also underscoring the personal sacrifices made by soldiers and defenders.
