PEDRO JUAN CABALLERO, PARAGUAY – APRIL 29, 2019 37-year-old man identified as Carlos Alberto Diaz was a member of a Brazilian organized group that smuggled weapons and drugs into the country from Paraguay. After earning a large sum of money, he wanted to show off to his friends on social media and posted a selfie photo where he held two bundles of hundred-dollar bills in his mouth.
That photo ultimately became his downfall when several local thieves targeted him. Based on the hotel room’s setup, they were able to identify the hotel he was staying at and waited there for him. As soon as he stepped outside, they started shooting. They were not deterred even though he was with his girlfriend and young son.
Carlos tried to escape, but they relentlessly pursued him. After 500 feet and 30 gunshots, seven of which had already hit him, he was struck by the eighth, fatal shot and fell dead to the ground. Whether they managed to steal the money is unknown.
