NIGERIA Angry mob carried out an act of street justice on a thief. He was stoned and run over with motorcycles until he died. He had been caught in the act while trying to steal a motorbike.
In many parts of Africa, including Nigeria, the phenomenon of mob justice still persists. The main reason is distrust in state authorities, whose effectiveness is often limited and slow in many regions. People also fear that a thief could bribe his way to freedom without facing any punishment.
Reactions to motorcycle theft in these poor countries are often extremely exaggerated. A motorbike is usually one of the most valuable possessions people own. Some are even existentially dependent on it, as it provides their livelihood. That’s why they perceive motorcycle theft almost as an attempt on their life.
